The Steps to Building a New Garage

Are you looking to add a little more storage room or make space for your own workshop? Building a new garage can solve both of these problems. Garage building is not an easy task, but you can do it with the right planning and tools. Following these steps will ensure that your new garage meets your expectations and is structurally sound.

Step 1: Develop a Plan

The first step when building anything is to devise a plan. In this step for building a garage, you will want to answer the following questions.

    1. What size garage do I need? – Think about what you will use your garage for. If you are just using it to store your car, then it won’t have to be as big as it would if you wanted workshop space too.
    2. What size garage will the city allow? – If you are within city limits, you will want to check to see if there are any restrictions on the size.
    3. Do you want any windows? If so, how many?
    4. What type of door do you want and how many?
    5. What parts will you do yourself and what will you subcontract out?

Once you have the answers to these questions, you can move on to step 2.

Step 2: Find a Garage Plan

Once you have a better idea of the desired size and design of your new garage, you will want to pick a plan. Finding a garage plan is simple. There are companies that specialize in making garage plans. You will want to look through their different blueprints and pick the one that best fits your needs. Once you find the perfect blueprint, you can then move on to step 3.

Step 3: Subcontracting

Garage building is not a one-person job. There are some things such as laying the foundation that you will likely have to subcontract out. A great way to find subcontractors is to ask your neighbors and read reviews online. You will also want to meet with a few different subcontractors to get quotes. Once you decide on a subcontractor, be sure to draw up and sign a contract with them.

Step 4: Bill of Materials

Once you have a subcontractor, the next step is to get the bill of materials. The best thing to do is take your design to a home improvement store. The workers there will be to work with you to get a good idea of what materials you will need and how much it will all cost. After you’ve taken care of the blueprints, subcontractors, and materials, all that’s left is to start building.
