by Jay Behm - The Heavy Duty garage plans series was created to meet or exceed the requirements of many garage plan customers to build an exceptionally sturdy garage. We have put together this collection of various footprint sizes
proven to be the most popular requested over many years. Colder and hotter climates can be more easily tolerated if walls are thick enough to accommodate minimum R-19 batt insulation and thicker insulation in the ceiling. That, in part,
is why these designs feature 2 x 6 wall framing instead of 2 x 4 and trussed roof.
These garage plans are also designed with greater than standard structural capacity. The 2 x 6 wall framing by far exceeds
the gravity and lateral loads imposed by nature. The extra capacity allows building wall-supported shelving, racks for pipes,
metal stock and lumber and/or wall mounted equipment. The thicker wall framing also resists impact loads much better than 2 x 4 framed walls.
So, within reason, the heavy duty garage plans were designed for rough service, as well.
Roof snow load capacity is specified to be much greater than our standard....but you can order trusses to whatever is locally required
for snow loads instead of the designated load.
A nominal 4" thick concrete slab, installed correctly have great structural capacity and really is suited for most any loads imposed in a building of that size.
The Heavy Duty garage plans do include an option to select a nominal 6" thick concrete slab floor which can include steel
reinforcing #4 bars @ 18" o.c. ea. way. Capacity is again, greatly increased.
