	Attic Access Ladders Attic spaces are inside the roof and above the ceiling and also have no permanent stair. (When a permanent stair is used to access the upper space it often defines the space as a second story so you'd have a two story building instead of a one story building with attic) Often a simple access opening of no less than 22" x 30" in the ceiling is a code compliant, minimum access to the attic. A more practical, user-friendly way to enter an attic space is the folding, pull-down, attic access ladder. These have been around for many years and, despite their utility, are the subject of many homeowner complaints - usually because they are old and rickety, probably worn out. Replacing with a new folding ladder assembly can greatly improve stability and comfort in use. The new products are superior to earlier models and can be retrofitted to older homes. If you are building a new garage with attic space I recommend browsing websites in the resource list below and visiting your local building materials supplier to see actual examples of attic access ladders, their sizes, requirements and options. "Here is my completed garage based on Plan 1211-1. Other than a few minor modifications to windows and an additional garage door opening into my back yard my contractor followed these plans to the letter. I had very few headaches with the City of Columbus building department. The plans were submitted with the modifications pencilled in and I had no problems.
